After the family farewells and a spirited (in every sense) send off from friends and colleagues in rainy London, we set off from Heathrow to take our first steps in our round the world trip.
After a relatively comfortable and timely eleven hour flight we arrived in Capetown, South Africa on a warm and sunny Tuesday morning.
Feeling the need to get to our hostel sooner rather than later we decided to blow about half of our weekly spend on being driven to Simonstown in a Mercedes! The breathtaking first sights of Table Mountain and its surroundings, coupled with the informative and humorous banter of the driver made the 40 minute journey worth every Rand.
Having checked in at the hostel, we took a quick sortie into Simonstown itself taking in the naval base, beachfront railway station, several interesting curio shops and - of course - the locations of all the pubs!
One fantastic fish and chip supper later, we collapsed into bed and into a jetlagged coma eagerly anticipating the experiences that lay in store for us...
